Missile and Drone Strikes Escalate as Ukraine and Russia Trade Blows Near Black Sea

Mykolaiv, Ukraine — A Russian missile strike on the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv has damaged homes and civilian infrastructure, injuring at least three people, according to local officials. Images released by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service show emergency responders working through debris illuminated by firelight.

The city, located near the Black Sea, has repeatedly come under Russian shelling throughout the war.

In a parallel escalation, a large fire broke out early Sunday at an oil depot near Sochi, a Russian resort city on the Black Sea. Russian authorities say the blaze was caused by a Ukrainian drone strike. The nearby Adler airport temporarily suspended flights as a precaution.

Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported on Telegram that debris from the drone hit a fuel tank. More than 120 firefighters have been deployed to contain the fire.

The Sochi incident was part of a broader wave of Ukrainian drone attacks over the weekend, targeting infrastructure in several southern Russian cities including Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh. Officials in Voronezh confirmed that four civilians were injured in one of the strikes.

These latest attacks come amid a spike in cross-border hostilities. On Thursday, a deadly missile assault on Kyiv killed at least 31 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has since renewed calls for tougher international sanctions on Russia.

Ukrainian military officials said the assault on the capital involved over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles — one of the deadliest air attacks on Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
