Trump Threatens 50% Tariff on Brazil, Demands End to Bolsonaro Trial

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 50% tariff on goods from Brazil, escalating tensions with the South American nation. The announcement came in a public letter shared on social media, where Trump also demanded an end to the ongoing prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Trump accused Brazil of launching “attacks” on US tech firms and conducting a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial for allegedly orchestrating a failed attempt to overturn Brazil’s 2022 election.

In response, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva vowed to retaliate with matching tariffs and warned Trump against meddling in Brazil’s judicial process. “No one is above the law,” Lula said earlier this week.

Escalating Trade Measures

Trump’s proposed 50% tariff marks a sharp increase from the previously announced 10% rate and significantly intensifies US trade pressure on Brazil. It also follows a broader pattern this week, as Trump issued tariff threats to more than 20 countries, including Japan and South Korea, with new duties set to take effect August 1.

Unlike other nations, Brazil has a trade surplus with the US, making it a key target in Trump’s strategy. He framed the tariff as necessary “to rectify the grave injustices of the current regime.”

Bolsonaro’s Trial and Tech Tensions

Trump has repeatedly criticized Bolsonaro’s trial, calling it “an international disgrace” and comparing it to his own legal battles. Bolsonaro, who has denied involvement in the 2023 government building attacks, was in the US at the time of the incident.

Trump’s letter also accused Brazil of censoring US social media platforms and violating free speech. His own company, Trump Media, has been subject to Brazilian court rulings limiting online content related to misinformation around the 2022 Brazilian election.

Brazil recently upheld laws making tech platforms accountable for harmful content, and courts have clashed with companies like X (formerly Twitter), which was briefly suspended in Brazil earlier this year.

Political and Diplomatic Fallout

Trump also criticized the recent BRICS summit in Rio, labeling the group “anti-American” and vowing to impose an additional 10% tariff on member nations. Brazil is a founding member of the BRICS bloc, which also includes China, Russia, India, and South Africa.

Lula, in turn, dismissed Trump’s rhetoric as outdated and imperial. “He needs to know that the world has changed,” Lula said. “We don’t want an emperor.”
